Safety Report:

By Butch Hamilton

Butch Hamilton’s opening remarks stressed the point that we need to be more careful.

OSHA reportable:

Union member stepped off the back of a truck bumper after reaching for a tool. Employee stepped on a small rock and twisted his knee. The truck’s bumper is 28 inches high. Management is looking into getting a step mounted on truck also, something to hold on to. A Taft employee re-injured his back.

In Storage:

PDR employee injured his lower back. An injury investigation has not been done.

An Administration Assistant complaint of emotional stress

Steve Robinson did not attend the last Safety Committee meeting. Four years ago he resigned from the committee. Why is he back? His attitude is counter-productive. Maybe someone else would be better suited for the position.

Safety Committee Congress meeting will take place at the Ontario Convention Center on June 13.

Information on fire ants with a phone number to get them removed will be sent to all Transmission and Storage facilities.

Transmission has a poor record on vehicle accidents. Circle of Safety Program will soon be in place. Employees are asked to do a 360-degree walk around their vehicles before driving off. Safety representatives will start planting tennis ball on trucks as a way to check if employees are performing the Circle of Safety. When an employee finds a tennis ball planted on his truck, he returns it to his safety representative. The Safety Committee is hoping for a 95 per cent return of the tennis balls.

A Gas company employee was accused of swerving onto the shoulder of the road; the tires on his truck threw a rock and broke the windshield of the car behind him. The accusation was proven untrue.

The Safety Committee is trying to get markings off trucks. Truck markings make employees an easy target for irate customers. So far, the company is only offering smaller flame. This item is being pushed up the ladder. FYI: Southwest Gas in Victorville, because of the high bills, has built a second fence around its base perimeter ground. Angry SWG customers trapped three employees of SWG inside a convenience store. Customers were angry about the high gas bills.

Safety Report

By Tim Wells

Tim reported on 2 Vehicle accidents and 1 industrial accident. An employee sneezed while driving and hit a pole. Another employee was involved in a vehicle accident while driving a forklift. Management drove the other vehicle.

A one-inch socket came off an impact wrench, flew up in the air and hit an employee in the chin. Employee required stitches.

An employee working in the dehydration plant broke his thumb. He was taken to First Care Aid for treatment. Before getting treatment the clinic had to call management for permission. Treatment was delayed while the clinic tried to get a hold of Mike Towne. This is a serious problem that needs to be corrected.

Near miss snakebite at Aliso: employee was bitten on the heel of his boot. The bite did not break the skin.

Storage is concentrating on reducing the number of strains and sprang.

Hearing test reminder: Employees should take a serious look at baseline lesson plan in ISSPE.

The Company and the Joint Steering Committee haven’t met in over a month.

Local 132 has giving up on the 85-point plan. At this time they have no interest in the plan.
