Overview

Performs higher level skilled technical assignments, independently or as a member of a crew, associated with the operation and maintenance of cathodic protection systems at transmission and underground storage facilities. Provides work direction and on-the-job training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·Schedules work assignments to ensure that workforce, equipment, and materials are available to accomplish assigned work.

·Provides work direction to crew members on a daily basis while operating and maintaining cathodic protection systems.

·Trains, instructs, and guides crew members in all aspects of cathodic protection work.

·Inspects work of other employees and contractors to ensure that assignments are completed properly and safely.

·Provides general feedback to supervision as required.

·Performs instrumented diagnostic field tests on cathodic protection facilities to assess condition and detect interference from substructures or foreign cathodic protection systems.

·Gathers, prepares, and maintains raw data and reports related to the cathodic protection system.

·Assess non-compliance and other deficiencies. Recommends, plans, and performs repairs and upgrades on cathodic protection systems.

·Designs and installs CP systems and components. e. g., deep well anodes, rectifiers, etc.

·Has computer skills to utilize standard Company programs. Inputs and analyzes data to identify system maintenance needs.

·Maintains and orders materials and supplies used for maintenance and capital projects. Assures integrity of system through the use of SMC books, manufacturers recommendations, and industry standards.

·Interprets and works from drawings that range from sketches to engineering drawings. Prepares "as built" sketches of additions or modifications to the system.

·Must pass regular re-qualification tests for the classification, as required.

Contacts

Contacts are primarily with facility supervisors, peers in related areas, and crew members. Frequent contact with vendors and contractors, regulatory personnel, and counterparts representing foreign cathodic protection systems. Able to communicate clearly. Meet with other companies in connection with resolving conflicts related to system interference problems. Frequently uses two-way radio and telephones.

Minimum Qualifications

Must successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test. Must possess a valid California Driver's License. Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions. Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or transferring from a non-safety sensitive job. Requires participation in the Company's random drug testing program. Must pass a pre-qualification examination. Able to perform intermediate mathematical calculations, background in basic electricity and cathodic protection theory. Must have previous satisfactory experience as a Transmission Technician or equivalent.

Desired Qualifications

Mechanical experience, background in transmission pipeline and underground storage field activities. Prior experience in providing work direction to others.

Other

May be required to work emergency call outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours.May be required to Job Site Report as necessary.

Physical Demand

Medium - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 25 pounds with a lifting up to approximately 50 pounds, as required.

Environmental Conditions

Work is predominately outdoors, with occasional office work as required for planning and data assessment. Exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, electrical current, high noise levels, rotating and vibrating equipment, rough terrain, high pressure gas wells and related piping and tubing. May be required to handle hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.

Equipment

All forms of large and small hand tools and power tools. Operates a variety of electronic testing and diagnostic equipment including; holiday detectors, pipeline locators, pipe-to-soil-potentiometers, volt meters, hand held data collection device, and personal computers.
