Overview
Performs higher level skilled technical assignments, independently or as a member of a crew, associated with the maintenance of engines and auxiliary equipment at transmission and underground storage compressor stations. Provides work direction and on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedules work assignments to ensure that workforce, equipment, and materials are available to accomplish assigned work.
- Provides work direction to crew members on a daily basis while maintaining compressor station and underground storage engines and equipment.
- Trains, instructs, and guides crew members in all aspects of their assignments.
- Inspects work of other employees and contractors to ensure that assignments are completed properly and safely.
- Provides general feedback to supervision as required.
- Utilizing complex test equipment and analyzers, adjusts and tunes engines and equipment for optimum performance, throughput, fuel economy, and compliance with SCAQMD emissions standards.
- Utilizing diagnostic instruments and techniques, locates and corrects problems, as well as predicts maintenance requirements, of engines and other mechanical equipment.
- Uses and applies manufacturers recommendations for equipment tolerances and operating parameters.
- Has computer skills to utilize standard Company programs. Has full understanding of computerized maintenance monitoring systems. Inputs and analyzes data to identify equipment maintenance needs.
- Assesses, plans, and advises management on equipment condition and needs.
- Maintains and orders materials and supplies used on various projects. Assures integrity of equipment through the use of SMC books and manufacturers recommendations.
Contacts
Daily contacts with management, peers in other disciplines, and crew members. Frequent contact with vendors and contractors, regulatory personnel, and staff. Able to communicate clearly.
Minimum Qualifications
Must successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test. Must possess a valid California Driver's License. Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions. Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or transferring from a non-safety sensitive job. Requires participation in the Company's random drug testing program. Must pass pre-qualification testing. Must have previous satisfactory experience as a Transmission Technician or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
Extensive mechanical experience, background in transmission and underground storage compressor station activities. Prior experience in providing work direction to others, experience in large reciprocal and rotating engine operations, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and construction. Able to perform intermediate mathematical calculations, background in basic electricity and electronic controls.

May be required to work emergency call outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours.

Physical Demand
Heavy - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds with lifting up to approximately 100 pounds as required. Equipment and materials exceeding 75 pounds are to be maneuvered through leveraging techniques and employees are instructed to work within their optimum carry ability and use lifting devices, carry aids (e. g. hand truck) and/or request assistance.
Environmental Conditions
Work is predominately in a compressor engine room. Occasional outdoor as well as office work required for planning and data assessment. Exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, occasional work on ladders or high platforms, confined spaces, high noise levels, rotating and vibrating equipment, rough terrain, high pressure gas wells and related piping and tubing. May be required to handle hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.
Equipment
All forms of large and small hand tools and power tools, electronic testing and diagnostic equipment, personal computers, all forms of lifting equipment and, at times, heavy construction equipment such as boom trucks and vacuum trucks.
