Overview
Performs a wide range of higher level skilled technical assignments, independently or as a member of a crew, associated with the operation, maintenance, and construction of the transmission pipeline system. Provides work direction and on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Contacts
- Schedules work assignments to ensure that workforce, equipment, and materials are available to accomplish assigned work.
- Provides work direction to crew members on a daily basis while performing construction and maintenance work on pipeline and facilities.
- Trains, instructs, and guides crew members in all aspects of their job duties.
- Inspects work of other employees and contractors to ensure that assignments are completed properly and safely.
- Provides general feedback to supervision as required.
- Prepares and maintains pipeline reports, prepares "as built" sketches of construction projects.
- Interprets and works from drawings that range from sketches to engineering drawings.
- Performs as a high-stress welder responsible for the execution of basic to advanced layout problems, fabrication, cutting, fitting and electric welding under difficult and /or critical conditions (i.e., in excavations during emergency situations).
- Assesses, plans, and performs repairs on leaking, corroded, or damaged pipelines.
- Installs and operates large tapping and pressure control equipment.
- Assesses, plans, and directs complex construction work such as excavations requiring complex shoring or sloping.
- Maintains and orders materials and supplies used on various projects. Assures pipeline integrity through the use of SMC books and design data sheets.
- Plans and directs gas handling, purging, and fire control operations on pipeline tie-ins and leak repairs.
- Prepares accurate written reports, various Company forms and field sketches to document field data, work performed, changes made.
- Must pass regular re-qualification tests for the classification, as required (i.e. welding).
Contacts are primarily with supervision and other members of work group. Occasionally is in contact with ETS/EDS customers or other interested parties, governmental inspectors, project superintendents, etc. to discuss or resolve conflicts regarding proposed Company activities. Occasionally meets with or works with technicians of equal level from other companies, Transmission field personnel and personnel from other departments. Company staff personnel in connection with investigations of cathodic protection field problem, R/W issues, etc. May communicate over two-way radio, cellular and standard telephone.
Minimum Qualifications
Must successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test. Must possess a valid California Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Class A or B license with special endorsements (i.e., X or H) as required. Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions. Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or transferring from a non-safety sensitive job. Requires participation in the Company's random drug and alcohol (Class A) testing program. Must pass a pre-qualification examination. Must have previous satisfactory experience as a Transmission Technician or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
Extensive mechanical experience, extensive background in transmission pipeline activities. Prior experience in providing work direction to others, experience in construction and the operation of heavy construction equipment. Must be able to perform intermediate mathematical calculations, including algebra and geometry.
Other
May be required to work emergency call outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours. May be required to job site report.
Physical Demand
Heavy - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds with lifting up to approximately 100 pounds as required. Emergency situations may require extended hours. Equipment and materials exceeding 75 pounds are to be maneuvered through leveraging techniques and employees are instructed to work within their optimum carry ability and use lifting devices, carry aids (e. g. hand truck) and/or request assistance.
Environmental Conditions
Work is predominately outdoors. Exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, rotating and vibrating equipment, electric arcs, controlled fire, welding torches, rough terrain, occasional work on ladders or high platforms, deep excavations, and confined spaces. May be exposed to high pressure gas. May be required to handle hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.
Equipment
Operates a wide variety of construction hand tools (pneumatic, gasoline powered, electric) hand-held electronic instruments, personal computer, heavy construction equipment, leakage detection equipment, welding machines, etc.
