Storage Safety Committee Meeting 

April 27, 2004

 

Present:   Ed Wager, Stefanie Hamburger, Roy Bozarth, Bob Hilty, Mike Towne, Kevin Fredericks, Leonard Grim, Art Thomas, Gary Lerch, Ninett Soulet

Absent:    Bernie Bauchman

Meeting called to order at 8:00 am

 

Rudy Weibel stopped by and informed us that he is a member of the SEU Safety Team therefore it is his responsibility to take our safety issues upward. Ed Wager stated that one of Mike’s Towne’s roles, as the Safety Champion is to take safety issues to Rudy for the SEU Safety Team.

 

  1. Lisa Jenkins addressed the new regulations regarding crane compliance.

a.     Tommie Spurgeon of Training Staff is currently attending Certification training in Az. When he returns he will train the personnel that needs certification. Which employees will need training is undecided and still in the review stages. The new regulations go in effect in 2005. Information will go out to Managers when all aspects are finalized.

 

  1. OSHA Safety Inspections
    1. Company has a program to help perform self-audits, which is system wide on the Internet.
    2. According to OSHA self-audits must be done at a minimum of once a year. Records of self-audits must be available on either the computer or hard copies.
    3. Roy will discuss a plan with Rudy.
    4. Roy asked if lighted emergency exit signs were required in compressor buildings. Ed Wager will follow-up on this topic.
    5. You should inform a supervisor and a safety rep when OSHA shows up to do an audit. If they are not available and you are a represented employee, you may request (see IIPP procedures) a union rep or a company attorney.

 

  1. Motor Vehicle Accident
    1. Recently an employee ran a red light while in a company vehicle and hit another car. He claimed he was distracted when a work related subject popped into his head at that precise moment. We should all try to remain attentive while driving. Some of the Smith Driving tools that one should follow are: Get the Big Picture and Aim High in Steering.
    2. VIRT – Vehicle Incident Response Team

 

  1. Safety Action Cards

a.     The group decided to work on a Safety Action Card. Because of Lyn Berman’s training back on Feb25th of this year, the group has direction to prepare one for Storage. Gary Lerch will take the lead and get input from the rest of the Safety Team. We all decided to work on Strains and Sprains.

 

  1. Safety Training Record Book Review

a.     All the safety training required is in a spreadsheet within the company. IIPP covers all the required annual training. Ruth Sommers handles Safety Lesson Plans, which are listed in the Outlook Public Folders. If a topic is not an FCD, it is a Safety Lesson.

 

  1. Safety Exercise (Eyes on Path) Review from each location:

a.     Goleta observed the following hazards

1. Uneven steps

2. Chain by compressor could be a tripping hazard and impede exit

     path

3. The emergency exit behind compressor 7 is very steep

4. Found a blind intersection

5. Dying pine trees by entrance doors

6. Potholes are dangerous to bicyclists

 

7.     Safety Congress scheduled for June 10.

a.     The packets to sign up for the training classes are expected to arrive in May.

 

8.     Check Local483.org for current safety issues.

 

9.     Roundtable:

a.     Mike asked everyone not to wait for a meeting to discuss Safety issues that come up. The Team needs to use e-mail in getting information out that all stations could use. He is also attending a Safety Champs meeting on May 4th and at that time would receive the Safety Congress packages and get them out right away.

 

 

Coordination for the next meeting will start in July.
